Thousand rally in Strasbourg demanding 'Freedom for Öcalan, status for Kurdistan'

Thousands attended a rally in Strasbourg to demand "Freedom for Öcalan, status for Kurdistan" and called on European institutions to take responsibility.

KCDK-E, TJK-E, TCŞ and the Union of European Democratic Forces (ADGB), organized a march and rally in Strasbourg, where the buildings of the Council of Europe, European Parliament and Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) are located.

Thousands attended the rally with the slogan "Freedom for Öcalan, status for Kurdistan".

The rally started with a minute's silence for the Kurdistan Revolutionary Martyrs. KCDK-E co-chair Zübeyde Zümrüt pointed out the isolation imposed on Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan and said: "We are fighting against the isolation imposed on Leader Apo. From here, we call out to the European Council and the CPT in this city. You are not fulfilling your duty. The Turkish state uses torture in İmralı. You are responsible for this isolation. There is a problem in İmralı and the source of this problem lies with these institutions.

We will no longer just say that the isolation should be lifted. We want freedom of our leadership. Permanent peace will only be achieved with the freedom of Leader Apo."

French European Council Deputy Emmanuel Fernandes attended the rally.

Fernandes emphasized that Abdullah Öcalan has been isolated for years and said: "We, Europe, will strive to end this isolation. The PKK needs to be removed from the list of terrorist organizations."

Ömer Güneş, one of Abdullah Öcalan's lawyers, said that they continuously apply to visit their clients who have been kept in isolation for years and added: "The CPT went and met with Abdullah Öcalan 9 times. They published reports. Those reports revealed how severe isolation Mr. Abdullah Öcalan was under. The isolation is not only on Abdullah Öcalan but also on the Kurdish people. Mr. Abdullah Öcalan is both a leader of the people and a theorist of peace in the Middle East. The Turkish state puts pressure on him with all its anti-democratic laws."
