It looks like every section of the society is going to have its share of detentions and repression before the 12 June general election. It is almost being done scientifically, certainly with method. The government's police knows where to hit and when. It chooses meticulously its targets. It was the Kurdish politicians to begin with, then the demonstrators joining the protests organized in support to the arrested politicians, then it was the turn of the women and children. Then it was virtually everyone, without distinction of age, gender, and everywhere.
In the past few days the target of the police have been the students. In Kurdistan and Turkish cities alike. So today at least 53 students have been arrested: three in Ýzmir, eight in Urfa, 10 in Erzincan, nine in Eskiþehir, three in Kütahya, and three citizens in Manisa, 15 in Ankara, four in Diyarbakýr, one in Ýzmir and finally three in Manisa. All were taken into custody as a result of indiscriminate house raids.
If the house raids were at random, the target were Kurdish students or supporter of pro-Kurdish organizations.
In the past few days Ýstanbul Public Prosecutor had remanded in custody 17 out of 23 students who had been detained last weekend.
According to the prosecutor a book was confiscated at one of the students house. The book is “Daðýn Ardýna Bakmak” written by Bejan Matur and published at the beginning of this year. It has been considered as criminal evidence. Bejan Matur is a columnist in a daily newspaper and no ban or confiscation order has been issued for her book.
Police also detained four children, between 12 and 14 years old, for throwing stones at police vehicles in Silopi, a district of Þýrnak.
In Adana police took five youngsters (including three minors) into custody, in the early morning. Six detained children in Osmanbey on Sunday had been released.
In addition, after attacking a demonstration in Manisa, police arrested five people, including a child. The detainees, ironically, were protesting the prosecutor’s officially arresting 11 people two days ago in Manisa.
Today police detained six more Peace and Democracy (BDP) members while they were hanging banners of Labor, Democracy and Freedom Block candidate in Bingöl.
