Türk: National Conference to be held in June
The committee of Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) has returned to Turkey after holding a series of meetings in Hewler city of Erbil, Iraq. The committee which consisted of BDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaþ, DTK Co-Chairs Ahmet Türk and Aysel Tuðluk, deputies Leyla Zana, Sýrrý Sakýk, Nazmi Gür met President of Federal Kurdistan Regional Government, Massoud Barzani, former head of government, Berhem Salih, KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) Foreign Affairs Executive Ahmed Kani and representatives of many organizations.
Speaking to DIHA about the visit to Hewler, BDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaþ and DTK Co-Chair Ahmet Türk evaluated the meetings which –they said- focused on the necessary approach to be displayed by Kurds in the face of current political developments in the Middle East.
DTK Co-Chair Ahmet Türk remarked that they had held favorable meetings with the authorities of many segments and reached a common standpoint which attached a major importance to the national unity of Kurds in this critical process. Türk notified that the conference which would take place this January would include all segments and movements in the region.
Pointing out that the conference would reveal a national politics, Türk said the followings; “Works for national unity doesn’t constitute a threat for the other peoples in the Middle East, a national unity of Kurds on the contrary aims to ensure a solution to the Kurdish problem which has been a bleeding wound for all peoples in the region. As the first step to a solution, all segments should be included the conference by voicing their political opinions and projects here.”
Türk pointed to the statements which suggest that the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) shouldn’t be included in the conference unless it lays down arms and continued as follows; “It is a fact that the PKK is a strong movement approved by the majority of the Kurdish people who have a mental and spiritual unity with the PKK in all parts of Kurdistan. The non-inclusion of PKK in the works and the conference of national unity would be a loss for the Kurdistan nation. It is therefore a necessity for all Kurdish political and civil movements, the PKK in particular, to attend this conference.”
BDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaþ also pointed to the importance of the meetings in Hewler and underlined that a Kurdish national unity is of vital importance and needs to be practiced now. Demirtaþ noted that all the Kurdish movements should support the conference by displaying a common political attitude.
“Kurds should take the stage now as a historical actor and get together for national purposes. This process should be approached with a national responsibility”, said Demirtaþ and strongly criticized the discussions on PKK’s inclusion in the conference as follows; “The current situation of the PKK doesn’t constitute an obstacle to Kurdistan National Conference, it on the contrary has vital importance for the solution of all problems. The conflict between the PKK and the state will not have a negative influence on the conference. The main purpose of the conference is to assure all rights of Kurds in this historical process by ensuring a national unity. On this basis, all segments in all parts of Kurdistan should offer a solution perspective to the Kurdish problem and to take concrete steps within the scope of these projects. These unfavourable discussions on PKK are put forward to let down the national benefits and projects of the Kurdish people”, added BDP Co-Chair.
