Twelve students were taken into custody during a protest against President Abdullah Gül visit to Istanbul University. The president came to attend the 75th foundation year activities of the Department of Economics.
Police took intense security measures around Beyazýt campus hours before Gül’s arrival at the university. Not disregarding possible ‘dangers’ in the area, police also seized the eggs sold by a pedlar close to the campus area.
Five students, member to Students’ Opposition, chanted slogans during Gül’s entering the campus area. “We don’t want the AKP in universities” and “Gül, leave my university” was the slogan chanted by students who were soon after intervened by Gül’s guards and detained by police. While protests against Gül continued after the detentions as well, seven more students were taken into custody for demanding Gül to leave the university.
The 12 students were taken to Beyazýt Police Department.
