Two former co-mayors of the HDP jailed in Mardin

Former co-mayors of the Mazıdağı district and Kılavuz town in Mardin province have been remanded in custody.

The Turkish regime’s political genocide operations against the Kurdish people and their elected representatives continues increasingly.

15 people were taken into custody on October 30 in the scope of an investigation launched by Mardin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office into a meeting held by the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) in the Nusaybin district in 2013.

While eight of the detainees have been released, including Free Women’s Movement (Tevgera Jinên Azad, TJA) Spokesperson Ayşe Gökkan, mayor of the Akarsu (Sitîlîle) town in Nusaybin district has been remanded in custody since.

Hatice Kalkan, Hüsnü Ağırman, former mayor of Mazıdağı Municipality, Hasip Aktaş and former mayor of the Kılavuz (Xelila) town in Dargeçit district, Ahmet İnci have been referred to Mardin Courthouse earlier today.

While Hatice Kalkan and Hüsnü Ağırman were released on condition of judicial control after giving their statements to the prosecutor’s office, Hasip Aktaş and Ahmet İnci were remanded in custody for alleged “membership to a terrorist organisation”.

Both politicians have been sent to Mardin E Type Closed Prison.
