Two more journalists sentenced to prison

DIHA reporter Ferhat Arslan and Gündem paper Managing Editor Ziya Çiçekçi have been sentenced to two months in prison each on the grounds of the news about CHP Dersim MP lawyer Hüseyin Aygün against his disabled client Ali Aðu (80) who couldn’t afford lawyer expenses.

The news about CHP Dersim MP lawyer Hüseyin Aygün’s garnishee order for the confiscation of his disabled client’s wheelchair, oxygen tube and sickbed led to two months imprisonment sentence for both DIHA reporter who made the news and Gündem paper’s Managing Editor Ziya Çiçekçi who published it.

At the trial at Tunceli Penal Court of First Instance, Arslan and Çiçekçi were sentenced to imprisonment for allegedly “insulting the complainant through press”.

Arslan’s lawyer Barýþ Yýldýrým reacted to the court decision and remarked that they would make an appeal and take the case to the ECHR. Yýldýrým said the followings; “Arslan and Çiçekçi were sentenced on the grounds of the alleged “cruel” expression in the news although my client actually didn’t use or write this word. The court’s decision has really astonished me. This case will be taken to the high Court of Appeals and ECHR.”

DIHA reporter Arslan also reacted to the decision which was given although he never used this word in the news he made. Arslan remarked that he was rebuked while giving statement at the prosecution office and subjected to threats of Aygün’s supporters, adding; “The case was treated from a political aspect from the beginning till the end. The prosecutor reprimanded and tried to shut me up during my testimony. The court board cannot make me believe that this decision isn’t political. It should be seen and known by everyone how democratic Hüseyin Aygün, member of the Parliamentary Commission on Human Rights, is. This tragicomic case will be taken to ECHR.”
