Two more journalists sentenced to prison

Twenty five people including DIHA (Dicle News Agency) reporter Vedat Yýldýz and South East Express Local Newspaper reporter Lokman Dayani who had been sued following events in Þýrnak on 21 October 2008, were sentenced to a total of 204 years and 7 months in prison for allegedly "membership of an organization” and “opposing the No. 2911 Law on Meetings and Demonstrations”.

The trial of the case, which was opened against 25 people including two news reporters due to the march held against the attack on PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) Leader Abdullah Öcalan on 21 October 2008 in Ýdil County of Þýrnak, was tried at Diyarbakir 4th High Criminal Court. While defendants didn’t attend the trial, their lawyer Veysel Vesek was present at the court. The prosecution reread the 6-page consideration as to the accusations and demanded sentence for defendants while lawyer Vesek presented the written defense against consideration to the court board and demanded acquittal of defendants.
