UK trade unions support the Freedom for Öcalan Campaign

PROSPECT union has joined the Freedom for Öcalan Campaign in the UK.

The PROSPECT union in central London last week decided to support the Freedom for Öcalan campaign at its central board meeting.

The PROSPECT union has 183,000 members in the sectors of agriculture, radio broadcasting, defense, education, child services, energy, environment, cultural heritage, maritime, telecom and transportation.

The union, which has more than 600 branches, has members and unionists throughout the United Kingdom.

PROSPECT, union, as well as USDAW, generally do not participate in international solidarity campaigns, yet both decided to join the Freedom for Öcalan campaign.

The Freedom for Öcalan campaign, launched in Britain more than two years ago, is now enjoying the support of very important trade unions.

The campaign was initiated with a statement made in the House of Commons in 2016 by the Unite the Union, the largest union in England and Wales, with 1.5 million members, and by the GMB.

As well as USDAW and PROSPECT the other unions supporting the campaign are:

Unison with 1.3 million members, CWU with 200,000 members, CWU with 450,000 members, GMB with 400,000 members, 45,500 members of the Train Drivers Association, ASLEF and TSSA, 55 (FBU), 80,000 members of the Scottish Teachers' Union (EIS), 80,000 members of the Railways, Maritime Transport Union (RMT).

Furthermore, the British Confederation of Trade Unions (TUC) with its 6 million members, have passed a motion, at last year’s Congress, to actively engaged in the campaign and called on members to work for Öcalan's freedom.

Thompsons Solicitors, who brings together 750 lawyers, gave full support to the campaign.

Furthermore, the world's largest workers' festival "Durham Miners Gala" to be held on July 14-16 will dedicated to Öcalan.

More than 200,000 people are expected to attend this festival. The "Durham Miners Gala" has been held uninterruptedly in Great Britain for 134 years.
