UN Envoy De Mistura in Damascus

Un envoy reached Damascus while works on the new Constitution are underway.

UN envoy Staffan de Mistura has reached Damascus on Wednesday. The visit coincides with works on the new Syrian Constitution, a delicate issues as all eyes are focused on the Damascus regime to see how inclusive the new Chart would be.

If de Mistura thought for a warm welcome to assist or even observe works on the Constitution, his hopes were soon deluded.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem made clear to de Mistura that the country’s constitution was a “sovereign matter”.

Indeed, al-Moulam added: “The constitution and everything related to it is a purely sovereign matter that the Syrian people decide on without any foreign intervention”.

There are concern as to how inclusive the new Constitution will be, given that regime circles have been so far little prones to extend the discussion beyond themselves.
