UN Special Envoy Pedersen says economic situation in Syria "extremely difficult"

The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen, said that the economic situation in Syria is "extremely difficult" and added that "9 out of 10 people in Syria live in poverty."

Geir O. Pedersen, the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, made statements before his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.

Evaluating the economic situation in Syria, Pedersen said that “the economic situation in Syria is extremely difficult. Nine out of 10 people live in poverty. We have Syria divided more or less into three different areas. All of this needs to change. But for this to change, we need to start on how we can concretely implement Security Council resolution 2254. And I am sure that after our discussion hopefully we will be able to move a small step forward on all of these issues.”
