Unions to dedicate general strike to miners who lost their lives in Zonguldak

The trade unions have decided to dedicate the general strike on 26 May to the 30 mine workers who lost their lives when a mine in Zonguldak collapsed.

The Confederation of Public Workers (KESK), TURK-IS, Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions (DISK) and Confederation of Public Workers Trade Unions (KAMU-SEN) had announced the general strike for the 26 of May as the government gave no satisfactory answers to the workers.

President of KESK, Sami Evren, made a statement on behalf of the other confederations. Evren criticized Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who said that the explosion in a mine was a sad event linked to fate.

“First of all, 4-C, flexible, without cover and irregular implementations for employment need to be abolished, work regulations must be re-arranged according to ILO and E.U rules to provide security and public employee’s rights to organize in a trade union with the right to go on strike and held collective agreement have to be recognized. These - said Evren - are the common demands of four confederations. We will be on strike on 26 May to speak up against work regulations which are in effect for 30 years and make us even poorer.”

The country real problems are unemployment, insecure work conditions and unorganized workers despite the efforts by the AKP governmet to cover up the problems said Evren referring Prime Minister Erdogan last speeches.

Evren also added that the general strike will be dedicated to the mine workers who lost their lives in the incident in Zonguldak.

At the same time the confederations and Chamber of Medicine’s Adana Branches also held a common press meeting in order to announce that they are going to be on strike as well on 26 May.

There are arguments about general strike day between confederations and lately some of trade unions stated that they are not going to take part in a general strike.
