We are quite familiar with the fact that even tear gas are being supplied using the state’s secret funds in order to implement the AKP government’s anti-freedom policies. But a new disturbing news has revealed that Hacettepe University administration last year “on the grounds of security” went out to tender and purchased tear gas from the governorship of Ankara to use against demonstrators in the university.
According to the report of daily Radikal paper, the university tender for tear gas has been brought into light within the process of amendments made by the new rector Prof. Murat Tuncer.
The new rector Tuncer has revealed the purchase of tear gas, shield and gas masks from the Governorship, reported Radikal.
Defending that the university “would never use tear gas against its students”,it was remarked that rector Tuncer had cancelled the tender which is consisted by this year’s agreement as well.
The report by Radikal also pointed out that the new rector of the university refused to provide security directorate with the names of the students who staged a protest demonstration against Roboski massacre which left 34 civilians dead on December 28. The rector on the contrary met student organizations on January 6 and told that their demonstration was a democratic right. The rector also remarked that the police wouldn’t be provided with the ‘list of protestor students’ and that students wouldn’t be investigated for the activities and acts they perform.
