US suspends non-immigrant visa services in Turkey

United States suspended non-immigrant visa services in Turkey on Sunday after one embassy staff arrested by Turkish police last week.

US embassy released a statement and said: “Recent events have forced the United States government to reassess the commitment of the government of Turkey to the security of U.S. mission and personnel.”

“In order to minimize the number of visitors to our embassy and consulates while this assessment proceeds, effective immediately we have suspended all non-immigrant visa services at all U.S. diplomatic facilities in Turkey” the statement read.

Last week, Turkish police arrested a U.S. consulate employee in Istanbul on charges of links to Fetullah Gulen sect.

The arrest was condemned by Washington as baseless and damaging to ties between the NATO allies.
