35 people were taken into custody in Mersin today as a result of police intervention in the demonstration by woman members of KESK Mersin Platform.
The protest act by KESK's woman members was organized to condemn the detention and arrests of unionist women in the recent period, on the eve of the coming International Women's Day on 8 March.
Tension rose in the demo as the press statement and march of protestors was prevented by police while the mass started to move towards Mersin Municipality to make a press statement there.
While Eðitim Sen Branch Secretary Nermin Karasu underlined that they wouldn't leave the area, police authorities remarked that they could permit the march on conditions that protestors wouldn't open any banners and chant any slogans.
Woman protestors were soon after attacked by police with gas bombs and sticks as the mass started to march in accompany with slogans. Many people were wounded and 35 people were taken into custody as a result of the police intervention. Detainees were taken to Mersin Security Directorate.
DIHA Mersin reporter Zeynep Kuriþ whom the police threatened with detention was also not allowed to shoot at the scene.
Among the detainees are Branch Chairs of SES, BES and Haber-Sen unions, members of Halkevi and Eðitim-Sen unions, SDP Mersin Chair, a student and two reporters of Evrensel paper.
