Yesterday it was the day of the general strike for the workers from Confederation of Public Employee Trade Unions (KESK) and Confederation of Revolutionary Workers Trade Unions (DISK). Other confederation Turk-is and KAMU-SEN called off the decision of general strike day a couple days ago and turned the action into one hour strike to support workers.
Workers and public employees from DISK and KESK were on the streets for the general strike all around Turkey. Working people spoke up all together for job security, secured democracy and democratic life. Demonstrations in the region –East and Southeastern Turkey-have focused on protests against military operations besides secured democracy.
Ergani, Bismil, Lice, Dicle district of Diyarbakir and centre of Diyarbakýr, Silopi; district of Sirnak, Sanliurfa, Kýzýltepe, Derik; districts of Mardin and centre of Mardin, Batman, Tunceli, Antakya, Istanbul, Izmir, Erciþ; district of Van and Centre of Van, Patnos and Dogubayazit; districts of Agri, Varto; district of Mus, Adana and Ankara were the cities where the biggest demonstrations have been held.
Police interventions have occurred at some demonstrations from time to time, but generally the strike day was quiet.
Teachers from Egitim Sen were stopped by police when they wanted to march in Ankara. Teachers blocked the high way by sit-in act.
Suleyman Celebi, president of DISK, made a statement in Istanbul for general strike day as well as Sami Evren and some other chair of trade unions, parties, NGO’s.
Celebi and Evren who criticized PM R.Tayyip Erdogan, who said dying because of explosions in mine is destiny for mine workers.
On the other hand the mine workers from Turk-is began to work one hour late in Zonguldak in the context of the confederation’s decision.
Meanwhile, the Tekel workers who are members of Türk Iþ and protesting the confederation, decided in the last few days to abandon their decision of a one-day strike on May 26, opting for a one-hour work stoppage.
Tekel workers were on top of the country’s agenda for weeks as they gathered in Ankara in the winter and stayed there for almost 80 days. They were protesting the privatization of Tekel and the partial loss of their rights and working conditions due to the privatization. Some workers also held a hunger strike. Tekel workers from the beginning of this week protested Türk Iþ in provinces such as Samsun, Adana, Ýzmir and Istanbul and occupied Türk Iþ buildings.
