SDF Spokesman: Operation in al-Bagouz is in the final phase

In eastern Syria fierce fighting between the last ISIS jihadists and the SDF continues. According to SDF spokesman Mustafa Bali, the last area occupied by the ISIS is surrounded from three sides.

The operation of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on the village of al-Bagouz in the East Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor is in the final phase. It is only a question of time until the last area under the rule of the terrorist militia Islamic State is liberated.

Speaking to ANF, SDF spokesman Mustafa Bali told that the jihadists are pushed back into a small area and are surrounded by SDF units from three sides. "Either they surrender to our fighters or they will die. There is no other alternative for them," says Bali.

The SDF evacuated nearly 17,000 civilians from the area during the operation and took them to safe areas under their control. During the last three days of fierce fighting in al-Bagouz after the evacuation of civilians, dozens of Islamists have been killed. Since still civilians are abused as living shields by the IS, the offensive had to be slowed according to Bali.
