Afrin students, another school year away from home

Afrin students are beginning another school year away from home. The students who had to leave Afrin when the Turkish state and its mercenary allies occupied the city and surrounding villages have settled in Shehba and Shêrawa districts.

The students whose schools were destroyed and plundered by the Turkish state insist on continuing their education despite all difficulties. They are receiving classes in homes turned into schools, and continue their education in their mother tongue despite challenges.

There are 11 schools in Shêrawa where 1,450 students are studying. Some of the students from Afrin are in the Veger (Return) Camp in the canton of Shehba. A total of 270 students receive education in 3 camps.

'They can't prevent our studying'

Hisên Hisên, a 5th grade student of the Martyr Shoreş Rojava School in the village of Dêrcemal in Shêrawa, said: "After the attacks of the mercenaries, most of our schools in Afrin were destroyed. The rest were converted into police stations. We couldn't complete our education because we had to leave Afrin. Although the invading Turkish state and its mercenary allies destroy our schools, they cannot prevent us from receiving our education. Afrin students will never give up their mother tongue and education."

'Studying will help us to get rid of the invaders'

Roşîn Miqdad, a 10th grade students of Şehit Dîdar School in Shêrawa, emphasized that the education in their mother tongue was an answer to the Turkish occupation and added: "We will continue our education persistently. This determination is also a message to the Turkish occupation. Those who bombed our villages and homes will not achieve their goals. By studying we will defeat the invaders."

‘We will never give up’

Drawing attention to the importance of mother tongue, Sîmav Kose said: "Our language is our identity and the foundation of our existence. The invading Turkish state wanted to kill us by bombing our schools in Afrin. They impose Turkish education in schools. The mercenaries continue to bomb our villages. We will not give up studying no matter what."

‘Children of Afrin are strong’

Awaz Hesen from Shêrawa Schools Administration told ANHA that all the villages in the district were bombed constantly and added: "Despite all this, the children of Afrin insist on studying, overcoming all obstacles. With the opening of schools, they continue their education in their mother tongue."

Most of the schools in Shêrawa are actually houses. The schools in the district also lack many educational materials and stationery.
