People in Northern Syria are still fleeing from the Turkish occupation forces. Every day dozens of people from the occupation zone reach the autonomous area.
In the Girê Spî Camp near Raqqa, 365 more displaced persons arrived over the Eid holiday. The camp, which was set up by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria after the Turkish invasion last October, now has over 600 tents. The camp management is using precarious means to try to comply with the preventive measures against the spread of the coronavirus.
One of the newcomers to the camp is Ismail al-Hisen from the village Şergirakê near Girê Spî (Tal Abyad). Because of the continuing attacks by the Turkish occupation forces, he and his family have decided to leave the village. "We were no longer safe in our lives," he says and thanks the camp management for their support.
During the invasion in October 2019 hundreds of thousands of people were displaced from the border region between Girê Spî and Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ain). The attacks by the Turkish army and its Islamist proxy troops continue. Turkey wants to expand its occupation zone, which was negotiated with international support.
