The special education center opened in Raqqa became the first center opened for children with disabilities and special education needs in Northern and Eastern Syria.
Upon the request of the Women's Committee, the Raqqa Civil Council Office for the Handicapped opened the first special education center in the city. In the center, called Martyr Beşir Fisêl El Hiwêdi, there are 120 disabled students between the ages of 4 and 14.
Expert staff in the center work day and night to adapt the disabled to society.
Lana Ehmed, one of the directors of the center, said, “After training expert staff, we opened this center with the means available to us. Our aim is to educate disabled children in the best way and adapt them to the society.”
The center is open every weekday on Fridays and Saturdays between 09:00 and 12:00. Lana stated that they received 400 student applications yet can take in only 120 students. Noting that there are 10 classes in the center and 10 students receive education in each, Lana called for solidarity to overcome the obstacles they encounter.
