Northern Syria Democratic Federation Constituent Assembly Co-chair Hediye Yusif stated that while they take advantage of experiences worldwide, their democratic federal system is different from others.
Northern Syria Democratic Federation Constituent Assembly Co-chair Hediye Yusif spoke to the ANF and said that the peoples of Northern Syria are determining their social contract themselves and making their own laws for the first time.
Yusif stated that they meet regularly with various societies in the region about Northern Syria Federation system and elections and that they regularly consult with the peoples and write the social contract and laws accordingly.
On establishing the federal system, Yusif said: “After we formed the Northern Syria Democratic Federation together, we started to organize the elections. The system will be put into practice with the elections.”
Yusif pointed out the difference of their Democratic Federation system and stated that nobody else has used a co-chair system or enacted a 50% women’s quota before, and so while they do take advantage of experiences worldwide, their system is different from other federal systems.
The three-phase elections of the Northern Syria Democratic Federation will start on September 22, 2017 with the commune elections. Northern Syria Cantons Independent Supreme Board of Elections determined August 16 to be the beginning of the candidacy period and has been accepting applications since.
