In Raqqa now there are people, and they are free, says YPJ Delal

YPJ fighter Delal Raqqa and her family took part in the offensive to liberate the city of Raqqa. She recalls the reign of terror under the Islamic State and says: "Today there are free people in Raqqa."

Delal Raqqa took part in the liberation of Raqqa as a YPJ fighter. The struggle for the liberation of the city, led by the YPJ Women's Defense Units, ended on 17 October 2017.

The Aleppo-born fighter explains: “I joined the YPJ to liberate Raqqa from the Islamic State. It was a city where cruelty reigned. The population and especially the women experienced an unparalleled brutality. Countless women and children were murdered in this city. The people were robbed of their lives by ISIS."

Delal’s father fell during the offensive

Delal’s father, sister and two of her brothers also took part in the offensive for the liberation of the city. “Fighting together in this offensive for the liberation gave us strength,” explains Delal Raqqa adding: “My father fell martyr in the offensive to liberate the city. His death as well as that of many other people gave me strength to fight. I was on the offensive on the Dariya front. There was heavy fighting there. The soil of Dariya was soaked with the blood of many friends. The bond with them made me strong in battle."

In the center of Raqqa there is a square that the people called Dewara Na’im. It was there ISIS carried out executions. Delal explains: “During the occupation by ISIS, these monsters, who seemed to have sprung straight from hell, impaled people's heads on iron bars. They said they did this to teach a lesson to everyone. Punishments were carried out in a way that human history has hardly seen before. Today this historic city has been freed from these murderous mercenaries and people can now live in freedom."
