Since the liberation of the northern Syrian city of Raqqa from the reign of ISIS terror, almost 19,000 booby traps and other explosive devices of the Islamists have been defused with limited means. These devices were mostly mines, but also bombs and artillery shells. Raqqa is now largely safe, but the search for mine-infested buildings and areas is still ongoing. Some of the deadly ISIS relics still lie dormant in the soil of the now self-governing region.
One such relic was cleared today by deminers from the Internal Security (Asayîş). The 15-kilo TNT had previously been discovered near the Basil Mosque in the Diliya neighborhood.
The so-called ISIS had prepared meticulously for the liberation offensive of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Raqqa and laid thousands of mines and booby traps. After the liberation of the city, some 4,200 people were mutilated by the deadly legacies.
