Leyla Agiri commemorated in Qamishlo

The women's umbrella organization Kongreya Star commemorated in Qamishlo Kurdish revolutionary Leyla Agiri, who died in a Turkish air strike in June.

A commemoration event for Leyla Agiri took place in Qamishlo. The Kurdish revolutionary, whose civil name was Filiz Aslan, died in June in a Turkish air attack. She was a member of the Executive Council of the Kurdistan Women’s Community (Komalên Jinên Kurdistanê, KJK) and was active for many years at the executive level in the different areas of the Kurdish liberation struggle-militarily, ideologically, socially.

Due to corona restrictions, only a limited number of people participated in the event in the cultural center in Qamishlo. The commemoration began with a minute of silence. Afterwards Remziya Mihemed gave a speech on behalf of the women's umbrella organization and said that the Turkish state attacks fighting women because it is afraid of them. Mihemed stressed that the women's movement would not be intimidated by this and would defend the heritage of role models such as Leyla, Hevrîn, Zîlan, Zehra, Hebûn, Sakine, Bêrîtan, Avesta, Amara and Aqide.

About the life story of Leyla Agiri, Remziya said: "Leyla was born in 1973 in Özalp in the province of Van and joined the liberation movement after graduating from high school in 1993. She named herself after Leyla Qasim as a guerrilla fighter. After meeting Abdullah Öcalan, she developed an even stronger will and began to become a symbol of the women's struggle.

After further speeches a film about the life of Leyla Agiri was shown.
