At the Rojava International Conference held in 2022, 24 March was declared International Martyrs' Day.
A memorial was held at the Serdem Culture and Art Center in Hesêkê, to mark the day and pay tribute to the many international martyrs of the Rojava Revolution. Dozens of internationalists, as well as the citizens of the region attended the memorial. The family of German internationalist fighter Andok Cotkar, who was killed during the invasion attacks against Serêkaniyê and Girê Spi in 2019, was also at the event led by the families of martyrs and the International Studies Coordination.
Martyrs' Families Assembly member, Rojda Ehmed, Martyr Andok Cotkar's mother, Ute Russ and Sozê Qamişlo from the Rojava Defense Committee, spoke at the event. Rojda Ehmed pointed out that the Internationalist martyrs joined the freedom struggle in Kurdistan and added that they would continue to carry out their struggle.
Ute Russ underlined that she learned about the struggle in Rojava thanks to her son, Constantin, and said that the family would fight in Germany until the Turkish state handed over the remains of Martyr Andok Cotkar. Russ also said that many other families, such as that of Martyr Legerîn Qerecox, are fighting as well.
Soze Qamişlo, in her speech addressing Andok Cotkar's family, said: "Welcome to the country of resistance and struggle" and reiterated that they will continue the martyrs’ struggle, taking strength from the statements made by Martyr Andok's mother.
A plaque was presented to Martyr Andok Cotkar's family by the Rojava International Studies Coordination, and a football uniform (recognized as the symbol of the city where a free life was established while Martyr Andok Cotkar was fighting in Raqqa) by the people of Raqqa. The memorial continued with a video about the internationalists’ struggle and a theater play about the struggle against fascism.
