MEP Schieder: We shouldn’t allow a demographic change in Rojava

Schieder called for the European Union to support the Rojava model that includes all the peoples and faith groups living in the region.

A delegation from Europe has arrived at Rojava on Sunday for talks with representatives of the Autonomous Administration of North-East Syria. The delegation, chaired by Austrian MEP Andreas Schieder (Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats), intends to monitor the situation on the ground after the Turkish invasion.

The delegation was received by the Foreign Affairs Commissioner of the self-government Abdulkarim Omar as well as the spokesman of the Foreign Relations Office Kemal Akif and the deputy co-chairs of the department, Abir Alya and Fanar al-Keet.

Speaking to the press after the meeting with the Foreign Affairs Department, the Austrian MEP said he was very happy and honored to be in Rojava and called for the European Union to support the Rojava model that includes all the peoples and faith groups living in the region.

Schieder expressed concerns over the Turkish state’s occupation attacks against North and East Syria and called for action to deal with the demolition caused by the attacks and to ensure an immediate access of humanitarian aid to the region.

Remarking that the Turkish state shouldn’t be allowed to change the demography of the region, MEP Schieder said; “During the meeting, emphasis was put on the need for the inclusion of all the peoples and faith groups of the region in the ongoing dialogues. This will be one of the best steps to be taken for the security of the region. International forces should come to the region to avert a demographic change.”

Schieder noted that they would convey their observations to the European Parliament and discuss the ways to support the region.

Stressing that it was only the youth of Rojava that resisted the ISIS gangs, Schieder continued; “The victory of the resisting youth was for all of humanity. We shouldn’t allow the Turkish state to invade the lands of these people and change the demographic structure because the world has been freed of ISIS terror thanks to these young people.”

Recalling that the Turkish state has forcibly displaced as many as 350,000 civilians, Schieder added; “We want a safe return home for these people.”
