The Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) rejects the draft constitutional declaration approved by the interim administration in Damascus, saying it is an attempt to reproduce dictatorship.
Ahmed Al-Sharaa, leader of HTS and head of the interim administration in Damascus, signed the Draft Constitution for the transitional period on Thursday.
In a statement regarding the signing of the "Draft Constitution" by the Damascus government, the Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) said, “We strongly reject attempts to reproduce dictatorship under the name of a ‘transition process’.”
The written statement released by the MSDF on Friday reads as follows:
“The Syrian Democratic Council rejects the constitutional declaration presented by the transitional government. In our statement on February 26, 2025, we emphasized that the 'National Dialogue Congress' is not transparent in terms of representing social structures or political movements. The MSD reaffirms that any steps taken based on the results of this congress will be insufficient to solve the national issue.
This draft reproduces repression in a new form, creates a centralized administration, gives absolute powers to the government. It hinders political work, makes it difficult to establish parties, and eliminates the path to democracy. At the same time, it ignores transitional judicial mechanisms and deepens national unrest.
We strongly reject attempts to reproduce dictatorship under the name of 'transition process'. We emphasize that the draft constitution should be the result of a genuine national consensus, not a project imposed by one party alone. In this context, we demand that the draft be revised. The constitution must ensure a fair distribution of power, protect freedom of political activity and recognize the rights of all Syrian components. It should establish a decentralized democratic system and clear mechanisms to ensure a fair transition.
Syria is the country of all of us. We do not accept the re-establishment of a despotic system.”
