The population remaining in the northern Syrian city of Girê Spî after the Turkish invasion last October protests against the occupation forces due to economic difficulties.
In Girê Spî (Tal Abyad), protests continue against the occupation regime of Turkey and the so-called "Syrian National Army" (SNA). On Monday, a crowd of people moved in front of the "Town Hall" used by the Turkish army and SNA groups as a base, and the protests have continued today. Similar uprisings are also reported from the towns of Siluk and Hemam, where there are also important bases of the occupation regime.
The uprising is caused by the introduction of the Turkish currency, the high price of bread and the fact that the wheat and flour from Girê Spî is brought over the border to Turkey. By systematically plundering the grain stocks that were eventually brought to Turkey and sold there, the occupation forces had caused a shortage of flour and thus a doubling of the price of bread. Now the Turkish state is trying to force people to use the Turkish lira. During today's protests at the border with Turkey, inhabitants of the city, occupied in October 2019, called the occupation regime "thieves" and shouted: "No to hunger and flour shortage".
