Public services halted in Shehba due to the Syrian embargo

Afrin and Shehba Canton Ecology and Regional Administrative Board restricted the operating hours of generators and water wells due to the embargo that the Damascus government has intensified in recent days.

The Afrin and Shehba Canton Ecology and Regional Administration Board made a press statement concerning the embargo of the Damascus government in front of its office in the Til Sosin village of Ehdas district. Mihemed Şêxo read out the statement in Arabic and Şervîn Şêxo in Kurdish.

Şervîn Şêxo noted that the people of Afrin migrated to Shehba as a result of the political, economic and military plans of the international forces and the invasion attacks of the Turkish state. She added that the displaced people of Afrin were exposed to attacks and embargoes there as well.

Şêxo revealed that the embargo caused the destruction of infrastructure and resources . She pointed out that despite the attacks and difficult living conditions, the people of Afrin remained adamant on returning to their lands.

A NEW FORCED DISPLACEMENT

Şêxo remarked that they always wanted to defend their rights in accordance with the international law and reminded of the resolution declared by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria for a solution to the Syrian crisis.

Şêxo stated that the government of Damascus has intensified the embargo and sought to make the people starve and displace them.  She said: “IDPs from Afrin and the citizens in Shehba have been under a heavy embargo for 5 years. As a result of the political agreements between the Damascus government, Russia and the Turkish state, the embargo is intensified and the pressure on the people is increasing. The Syrian regime is preventing the passage of basic needs such as fuel, medicine and food.”

PUBLIC SERVICES HALTED

Şêxo pointed out that the region is on the verge of a major disaster due to the attacks of the invading Turkish state and the aggravated embargo by the Damascus government. She added that the regional authorities had to halt public services.

Şêxo noted that they restricted the operating hours of generators and water wells due to the lack of fuel. She warned that "if the embargo in Shehba continues, electricity supply institutions, water supply, bakeries, hospitals and schools will go out of service."

Şêxo reacted to the narrow point of view of the Damascus government and its insistence on aggravating the embargo. She urged international organizations to intervene immediately and to put pressure on the Damascus government to lift the blockade.
