Rojava: Dreams and thoughts expressed in paintings

Anod Faris Hesen overcame all obstacles put in her path by the patriarchy and became an artist at the age of 60. She participated in ten exhibitions. Her paintings deal with the theme "woman".

Anod Faris Hesen comes from the village of Boncog in Qamishlo, northern Syria. She is mother of seven children and with the help of her son, who graduated from the faculty of fine arts, she was able to rediscover and develop her own ability to paint. She is now well known as an artist and has already had ten exhibitions of her paintings.

Her dreams came true in 2011

Hesen tells the ANHA news agency that she has been painting since her childhood, but due to the role that society assigned to women, she was never able to develop the ability. After her son had finished his education in art, he encouraged his mother and helped her develop her talent. Hesen is a tailor by profession, but she has been pursuing her artistic skills since 2011.

She watched her son and became a painter

Hesen watched her son closely while painting and choosing the colours. Now she paints about Kurdish women, nature, the resistance in Northern and Eastern Syria and the relations within the society. Sometimes she works for days on a painting, she explains: "I try to bring my thoughts to the canvas. That's why it sometimes happens that I work on one painting for days, while I finish others within hours. I try to show the suffering of women, the oppression and the struggle against it. If a person wants to reach his goal, then nobody can stop him. That's why I call on women to overcome all obstacles and to pursue their talents and desires."

The 60-year-old has already been awarded for her paintings by the Art and Culture Committee of Cizîrê.
