Harot Kevork is the last of Afrin’s Armenians still living in Afrin city centre. Living under the Turkish attacks for 20 days Kevork recalls the horror stories of Armenian genocide.
Harot Kevork is 61 years old. He is the last Armenian living in Afrin. His family survived the Armenian Genocide and were banished to Ezaz and then Aleppo. About 50 years ago Kevork’s family settled in Afrin and started working as blacksmith.
Today Kevork has a small ironmonger business in Vatani junction. There were a lot of businesses owned by Armenians in the same area but now they are all gone.
“We managed to build a common life with all the peoples. We stand with our city. Turkey continues its attack against the peoples for over 100 years. They are massacring children just as they massacred then. The genocide found us after 100 years” Kevork said.
Kevork called upon Turkey to stop the attacks and asked “Haven’t you killed enough of these people?”. He pointed out that Afrin is the only region where there were no war and said, “why are you trying to destroy a city which became a safe haven for all?”.
“We were banished from our homeland. We came here, but now they are trying to expel us from here. We want this war and this attacks to end. Everybody hear us! This is our call to all peoples of the world” Kevork said.
