Women demonstrate in Santiago, demanding freedom for Öcalan

In Santiago, a demonstration organized by the Committee in Solidarity with the Kurdistan Women's Movement demanded freedom for Abdullah Öcalan.

A demonstration was held in front of the Turkish Consulate in Santiago, the capital of Chile, to support Abdullah Öcalan’s ‘Call for Peace and Democratic Society’ and to demand the freedom of the Kurdish leader. Representatives of many organizations and activists participated in the demonstration on Thursday.

During the demonstration, women left white scarves in front of the Consulate in reference to the white scarves of Kurdish mothers symbolizing peace.

This symbolic gesture drew attention to the Kurdish people's tradition of peaceful resistance and emphasized the decisive role of women in the culture of peace.

Demonstrators said that the Turkish state and the countries cooperating with it must fulfill their responsibilities as it is time for peace and democracy for the Kurds and all peoples. The activists stated that they will stand shoulder to shoulder with the Kurdish people in their struggle for peace and democracy until the end.

A statement on behalf of the Committee in Solidarity with the Kurdistan Women's Movement condemned the unlawful imprisonment and inhuman isolation of Abdullah Öcalan. It called on the Turkish state to stop the attacks in Kurdistan and to resolve the Kurdish question through democratic methods.

The statement emphasized that it is unacceptable for Chile, which has strong diplomatic and commercial ties with Turkey, to remain silent on human rights violations and crimes against humanity committed by the Turkish state. The Chilean government was urged to take a stand against these violations.

The banners carried during the demonstration included the following slogans:  “Democracy is a way of life, not just a system”, ‘Nationalism is a disease, the cure is freedom’, ”Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan, political solution for the Kurdish people.”

Finally, the women underlined that the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan is an indispensable criterion for the beginning of a new phase in the struggle of the Kurdish people.
