The speech of director, theater and movie actor Rutkay Aziz, who was granted the Award for social responsibility in art, left its mark on Antalya Golden Orange International Film Festival which was recently organized for the 48th time by Antalya Metropolitan Municipality and Antalya Culture and Art Foundation (AKSAV).
This year’s Golden Orange Film Festival granted awards that couldn’t be granted in 1979 due to censorship and in 1980 because of the military coup.
Commenting this situation as a historical step in Turkey, Aziz remarked that he wished the same for movie makers in the countries that have also gone through periods of fascism and military coup. Aziz said the followings;
“Real artists are supposed to witness the truths of their country and of the world. What I witnessed in the truths of my country is the comedown of superiority of law, a speedy headway of an unjust development initiative and the imprisonment of students who open a banner reading "We want free education”, while the students demanding free education revolutionize in Chili.
This festival’s theme is “woman” but nowhere else in the world do women suffer as much as in Turkey from rape and murder. As Goethe says; “There is nothing more terrible than ignorance in action.” And this is a truth of my country. As to the truths of the world; screams of war, hunger, occupancy, exploitation. These are what real artists are supposed to witness.
As Charlie Chaplin also says, cinema is an art of peace and it will contribute to both my country and the world in terms of democracy, freedom, peace and humanity by protecting the peace content in itself.”
