Mobilisation for the Green Left Party in Basel

The Green Left Party is also fighting for every vote abroad for the democratisation of Turkey and Northern Kurdistan. Preparations for the May 14 elections are in full swing in Switzerland as well.

The elections on 14 May are only a few weeks away. Supporters of the Green Left Party are also intensively campaigning abroad for a fundamental change of the political system in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan and an end to the AKP dictatorship. Voting abroad is about to begin in the run-up to the elections. In Switzerland, voting will start on 29 April. The Green Left Party election coordination in Basel has completed its preparations. Now the task is to mobilise people to the polls between 29 April and 7 May.

The Green Left Party election coordination in the canton of Basel consists of 25 people. One of them is Mehmet Karahan, who said the following regarding their work: "All our preparations have been completed. We have mainly tried to register first-time voters. Our observers are ready to guarantee the security of the ballot boxes. Voting will start on 29 April and continue until 7 May. Our committee consists of 25 people from the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland. This committee also includes members of the Labour and Freedom Alliance. We have done a good job so far. Concrete preparations have been made and buses have been hired to take voters to the polling stations. We will provide buses in four regions and transport people to Zurich. We continue to work on this day by day. We are handing out leaflets. Our people are very excited, our party is always the strongest party in Switzerland. We believe that we will be in first place again."

Seyit Maniş is also a member of the election coordination team. He lost many of his relatives in Maraş in the February 6 earthquake in Northern Kurdistan. Regarding the preparation for the elections, he stated: "We managed to reach thousands of eligible voters and to help hundreds of unregistered people who have reached voting age or have newly arrived here to register. We have gained experience in the Basel region in previous elections, so we are no strangers to this approach. We are continuing our efforts to be more successful than in the last elections. Aware of the difficult phase we are going through, we are mobilising all our forces for the overthrow of the current system and for the future of our people. We are wholeheartedly committed to these works."

Sakine Tosun, who is actively working in the election campaign, said: "I call on all our people to stand up for themselves, for their own party. This oppression, this bondage must end. Let us vote for our own people and our own party. Let us say: enough is enough. Enough of this oppression. Enough of this catastrophe. Enough is enough."

Abdulselam Sakık from Muş has lived in Basel for years. He is also active in the election campaign. "Whoever has the right to vote must go to the polls. No one should hold back. This election is a question of being or not being for the Kurds. This election is not like other elections. If we lose this election, we will be destroyed. No one should say they are busy and then not go to the polls."

Mine Nazari is one of the Saturday Mothers who has had to live in exile in Basel for two years. She is also actively working in the election campaign. "We continue our work in cooperation with the women's structures of the different areas here. To check and renew the voter registrations, we have been going from house to house, distributing Green Left Party brochures. After the end of the registration process, now that the election date is set, we are as excited as when we first won the election. Our name is now the Green Left Party, but we carry on the spirit of the HDP in our work.

This election is a great opportunity for us to end oppression, persecution, injustice and social inequality. The rulers are paid seven or eight salaries while many people cannot afford a kilo of onions. The Saturday Mothers are being attacked and denied access to Galatasaray Square despite the Constitutional Court ruling to the contrary. These elections are a great opportunity to overthrow the dictator and all his anti-democratic measures with which he has covered the country and to create a democratic climate."

Mustafa Demir, also a member of the election coordination, stated: "In order to reach voters, we are active at weddings, in shops, in coffee houses and other places where people are, and we are met with great interest and enthusiasm. Our work does not only take place in the canton of Basel. The canton of Basel borders both Germany and France. We do everything we can to bring voters to polling stations near them. We are aware of the importance of every single vote against the current regime in Turkey and Kurdistan. In this context, we urge all our voters to go to the polls on election day and cast their vote."
