Asrın Law Office emphasized that the abolition of the Imrali isolation system is the prerequisite for a democratic resolution of the Kurdish question.
Asrın Law Office released a written statement about the 26th anniversary of the 15 February conspiracy against Abdullah Öcalan.
Asrın Law Office wrote: "15 February marks the 26th anniversary of the international conspiracy that targeted Abdullah Öcalan. This was not only an attack against the Kurdish people but also an assault on equal and free coexistence between the peoples of Turkey and the Middle East. Through this international conspiracy, Mr. Öcalan was kidnapped and extradited to Turkey. For 26 years, he has been held under the İmrali isolation system, which is undeniably a continuation of this conspiracy."
The statement added: "The Imrali isolation system is a regime of torture where national and international laws are not enforced, all legal, constitutional, and contractual rights are suspended, and a multi-layered, inhumane treatment is systematically imposed. This system is shaped by interstate political interests and serves as a tool of strategic control. The extraordinary regime enforced on İmrali Island is directly linked to the Kurdish issue. Over time, it has become a defining factor in Turkey’s approach to human rights, democratization, the economy, and foreign policy. The influence of this system extends beyond Imrali, shaping the entire governance structure of the country."
The statement underlined that "continuous and de facto restrictions and prohibitions enforced in Imrali have, over time, been incorporated into legal frameworks and extended to all other prisons. The life imprisonment model imposed on Mr. Öcalan has now been applied to thousands of other prisoners. The insistence on maintaining the İmralı isolation regime and refusing a solution to the Kurdish issue has escalated economic and political crises, deepened war policies and the trustee system, and obstructed societal freedom and peace. Therefore, the abolition of the İmralı isolation system is the prerequisite for a democratic resolution of the Kurdish issue. This step would not only improve the country’s human rights, legal, and democratic standards but also ensure free and just coexistence for all peoples in the region, particularly Kurds and Turks."
The statement pointed out that "despite enduring a 26-year regime of severe isolation and torture, Mr. Öcalan has remained steadfast in his commitment to a democratic, political, and legal resolution of the Kurdish issue. As we continue to witness today, he has not only preserved this stance but has strengthened it, demonstrating a unique potential to overcome the international conspiracy and the policies of isolation imposed upon him as a result of global power dynamics. Mr. Öcalan has countered the international conspiracy and isolation policies with a universal strategy for peace.
After four years of complete incommunicado detention, Mr. Öcalan made his first contact on October 23, 2024. During this meeting, he stated, 'The isolation continues. If the conditions are met, I have the theoretical and practical power to shift this process from a ground of conflict and violence to one of political and legal resolution.' With these words, he demonstrated his unwavering resolve and determination."
The statement said that "in the meeting held on 28 December 2024, Mr. Öcalan further declared, 'All our efforts will elevate this country to the level it deserves and, at the same time, serve as a valuable guide for democratic transformation. This is an era of peace, democracy, and fraternity for Turkey and the region.' With this message, he once again renewed his call for democracy and peace. The only true path to ensuring this vision of peace and democracy is through the abolition of the Imrali system and the physical freedom of Mr. Öcalan."
