Indictment prepared against 6 journalists arrested in December

Indictment has been prepared against six journalists, three of whom already imprisoned, who were detained during a raid in Istanbul on 25 December, 2016.

Indictment has been prepared against six journalists who were detained during a raid in Istanbul on 25 December, 2016 for their coverage of the emails of Energy and Natural Resources Minister and Tayyip Erdoğan's son-in-law Berat Albayrak, leaked by hacker group RedHack.

The journalists; ETHA (Etkin News Agency) managing editor Derya Otakan, shuttered DİHA (Dicle News Agency) news director Ömer Çelik and Istanbul correspondent Metin Yoksu, former Diken editor Tunca Öğreten, BirGün daily accountant Mahir Kanaat and Yolculuk magazine editor Eray Sargın had been held in custody for 24 days before being referred to court on 17 January, 2017.

BirGün journalist Mahir Kanaat, former Diken editor Tunca Öğreten and DİHA news director Ömer Çelik were formally arrested after appearing at court for alleged “membership to a terrorist organization”, while ETHA managing editor Derya Otakan, DIHA Istanbul correspondent Metin Yoksu and Yolculuk editor Eray Sargın were released pending a trial, on condition of judicial control.

The indictment against six journalists, and German daily Die Welt correspondent for Turkey, Deniz Yücel who is also jailed since 27 February, has been prepared by the press prosecutor of Istanbul's Çağlayan Courthouse. The indictment prepared 163 days later has been sent to the 29th High Criminal Court.
