Media production company Gizinge Berbeyan protested the decision to close its center, saying it was a violation of press freedom and women's rights.
Kompanya Gizinge Berbeyan is a media production company which operates in South Kurdistan.
On Tuesday afternoon, an internal security unit raided the media production center in Sulaymaniyah without giving any explanation to the workers.
After the raid and the order to close the center, the company issued a statement, saying that no official notification was given as to why the closure was ordered. Among others, the company also produces Jin TV programs.
Kompanya Gizinge Berbeyan wrote: "On 31 December, the Sulaymaniyah security forces, in cooperation with the Iraqi central government, the Kurdistan Regional government and regional security institutions, closed our media centers without any official notification or legal report.
This decision is against press freedom and human rights. It also aims to undermine efforts carried out through the media to support the rights of Kurdish women. As Kompanya Gizîngê Berbeyan, which has been operating in the Kurdistan Region for seven years, we completely reject this decision."
The statement added: "We clearly state that we will never stop supporting Kurdish women and will not allow them to silence any voice defending the rights of women in the Kurdistan Region. This decision has not only violated freedom of expression, but has also harmed the rights of women in the region.
We believe that rights cannot be taken away by violence or arbitrary decisions. We will continue our struggle through legal means to protect our rights and the rights of women."
