The 4th hearing of the Özgür Gündem newspaper's main trial was held in Istanbul. The paper was closed by the Decree Law (KHK).
Eren Keskin, the editor-in-chief on duty of the newspaper and Inan Kızılkaya, the editor-in-chief were present at the hearing at the Istanbul 23rd High Criminal Court in Çağlayan, while the newspaper's owner Kemal Sancılı and editor-in-chief Zana (Bilir) Kaya, did not attend the hearing.
Keskin, Sancılı, Kızılkaya and Kaya were tried on charges of "violating the unity of the state and the unity of the country", "membership of an illegal organization" and "organization propaganda".
After announcing its ruling, the court committee sentenced Sancılı, Kızılkaya and Keskin to 6 years and 3 months in prison on charges of "being a member of an illegal organization". Kaya was sentenced to 1 year and 13 months in prison on the charge of "making propaganda for an illegal organisation".
