Freedom for Ill Prisoners calls for release of Mehmet Can Demir

The Freedom for Ill Prisoners Initiative held its 298th week of protest via social media because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Initiative this week drew attention to the condition of the sick prisoners through a video statement by Nuray Çevirmen, Human Rights Association (İHD) Central Executive Board member.

Çevirmen first of all remembered that Sabri Kaya, a prisoner in Osmaniye T Type 2 Closed Prison, lost his life on the day of his release. "This death - she said - was a preventable death, he could have been allowed to live, but he was not."

Çevirmen then drew attention to the health status of Mehmet Can Demir, a 59-year-old prisoner held in Bitlis E Type Closed Prison. The IHD executive explained that Demir was not released despite his rigth to benefit from the Law of Execution. "Demir underwent urgent hernia surgeries for 4-5 times at various times. He also suffered a heart attack. He suffers from gastric bleeding due to stomach ulcer disease and was before saved from sure death."

Çevirmen added that Demir should be released immediately as his life is at risk.
