Actions for ill prisoners have been carried out via social media in Istanbul and Izmir.
ISTANBUL
Nuray Çevirmen, IHD Central Executive Committee member, made a video statement to underline the situation of prisoner Mevlüt Öztaş who is in Sincan L-Type prison and suffers from cancer.
This week was the 300th week of action for the Freedom for Ill Prisoners Initiative.
Çevirmen said: "Mevlüt Öztaş, has been a journalist for 24 years and has been in prison since February 2018".
Çevirmen added that Öztaş was kept handcuffed to the bed while receiving his chemotherapy session.
The family was told that Öztaş has been diagnosed with pancreatic but is not clear whether the cancer has spread or a risky surgery could still be performed.
IZMIR
The Human Rights Association (IHD) İzmir Branch Prisons Commission also carried out its weekly action on social media.
IHD branch executive Ahmet Cicek said that ill prisoners are at high risk in Turkey’s jails. He added that many prisoners have caught many diseases and lack treatments.
Çiçek underlined the situation of Hasan Şaşmaz, who is held in Manisa T Type Closed Prison and has been in jail for 27 years.
