Report says Roma are Europe's largest and most disadvantaged minority, calls on governments to act

A report prepared by the European Roma Grassroots Organization stated that the Roma population is subjected to serious discrimination and called for the governments of the countries and the EU to take action against it.

According to a report which documents the living conditions of the Roma and Sinti communities, Roma are Europe's largest and most disadvantaged minority.

The report notes that Roma are treated significantly unequally in the health sector. One in five members of the Roma community suffers from chronic diseases, while one in four does not have health insurance. Data from national studies reveal that the Roma community has serious difficulties in accessing health services in many EU member states.

The figures show that conditions have not improved since the 2020 EU Roma Strategic Framework for Equality, Inclusion and Political Participation, according to Sureyya Post, the Swedish activist who prepared the report. Post states that the COVID pandemic has exacerbated the situation.

Today, more than half of the Roma population, 61%, still do not have adequate housing or access to water; one-third, 31%, of children starve because they do not have suitable food to eat.

The report emphasizes that the EU and member state governments need to take action to ensure both the fundamental rights of the Roma and their political participation.
