Silivri jail report confirms presence of many Covid-19 cases

IHD and lawyers associations visited Silivri prison where 107 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed.

The Human Rights Association (IHD), Contemporary Lawyers Association (ÇHD), Federation of Legal and Solidarity with Prisoners’ Families Associations (MED TUHAD-FED) and Lawyers for Freedom Association (ÖHD) issued a report on their visit to Silivri Prison on 22 May.

The delegation said that they could meet with 5 prisoners in Silivri 7 L Type Closed Prison. They confirmed to the delegation that there are 38 people in a ward with cough and other symptoms.

The report said that 15 wards were in quarantine and 107 prisoners were positive to coronavirus in L Type Prison No. 7.

The report added that prisoners have problems in getting personal cleaning materials, and underlined that prisoners have not been in the infirmary for 2 months. In addition, newspapers are not delivered.

The report, which stated that some guards did not use masks and gloves, emphasized that spraying and disinfection were very superficial.

The case of M. F. Ç. and A. K., two prisoners who have been in a single cell for 80 days since the day they were arrested, was underlined.

The report listed what should be done. In particular, the delegation said the prisoners should have access to cleaning products and adequate hygiene, ill prisoners should be released as well as olf prisoners, children and pregnant women prisoners.
