A neighbourhood under isolation

The state, which has literally blockaded the city center of Hakkari, has completely isolated some neighbourhoods and villages. One of these neighbourhoods is Karşıyaka.

The Turkish state has turned the neighbourhood into a military field with thousands of police stations, posts and barracks built in Hakkari center and its province.

All villages are under blockade. There are checkpoints on the roads leading to Hakkari city center: All vehicles and people entering and exiting are searched. All state institutions, including the seized Hakkari Municipality, have been turned into police stations. There are always armoured vehicles on the main streets and at the beginning of each street. In the evenings, patrols are made in the areas with armoured vehicle convoys.

The neighbourhood of Karşıyaka is under isolation. The neighbourhood is known as a corner of heaven because of its natural beauty, clear waters, vineyards and gardens, and has been struggling for life under the blockade and isolation carried out by the state for years. Most of the broken and narrow neighbourhood roads are covered with ditches and rocks. The residents can take people to the hospital by vehicle or ambulances only after taking them out of the neighbourhood. Drinking water has not flowed for years. The residents of the neighbourhood have to get drinking water with their own means.

Speaking to ANF, a neighbourhood resident said: “The state looks at us as enemies. We could not even go to visit our neighbour. Our neighbourhood is under state isolation. They have not brought any service in our neighbourhood for years.”
