Iraqi troops ambushed a vehicle carrying fighters of the Shengal Resistance Units (YBŞ) last night, wounding three of them.
The Yazidi city in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq) is under a state of emergency as Iraqi troops blockaded the city center and deployed tanks and heavy weapons. Residents of Shengal are expressing their reaction with protest demonstrations.
The Shengal Coordination for Components and National Forces, stressing that Iraq must respect the forces who have fought ISIS.
The statement on Wednesday said: “We are concerned about the latest developments in the region. We call on all parties to immediately de-escalate the situation and not to escalate tensions. All groups who have resisted and defended themselves against ISIS must be respected, and any discourse and attempts to label these forces as 'terrorists' must end.”
The statement continued: “The best way to overcome problems is rational dialogue. The parties must adopt the language of agreement and reject violence. Solutions that will serve regional stability and the feelings of the people should be produced, and the interests of all citizens living in Shengal should be taken into consideration. We believe that it is possible to overcome this difficult situation and ensure unity and solidarity.”
