PKK fighter of 27 years, Dijwar Botan dies of heart attack

Dijwar Botan was an active member of the Kurdish liberation movement for 27 years. In December 2019 he died of a heart attack. The PKK calls his death a great loss for Kurdistan.

PKK Committee Solidarity with the Families of Martyrs announced that Mehmet Sait Demir (Dijwar Botan) died of a heart attack on 7 December 2019.

Mehmet Sait Demir was born in 1973 in Eruh district of Siirt province and joined the Kurdish liberation struggle from Mersin in 1992.

"Dijwar Botan has responsibly fulfilled the tasks assigned to him during his 27 years of struggle in Bakur, Rojava, Bashur Kurdistan and wherever there was need. His death is a great loss for us", says the statement of the PKK committee.

Mehmet Sait Demir was seriously injured and lost a foot shortly after joining the guerrillas. For medical treatment, he subsequently stayed in Syria and Rojava, where he worked among the people until 2001. This work took place under difficult conditions because the repression against the Kurdish movement reached a peak due to an agreement between Turkey and Syria and Abdullah Öcalan had to leave Syria on 9 October 1998.

In 2001, Mehmet Sait Demir returned to the Kurdish mountains and worked in different areas. He was active in educational work and dealt with the Kurdish language, history and culture. He wrote his own texts and translated books into the Kurdish language,” said the PKK statement.
