Turkish forces attack commemoration for Paris massacre victim Mîr Perwer in Muş

The police and gendarmerie prevented people from commemorating Kurdish singer Mîr Perwer, who was murdered in Paris one year ago, at his grave. Mîr Perwer's family was attacked during the crackdown.

Masses gathered in Muş province to commemorate Mîr Perwer (Mehmet Şirin Aydın) from the Kurdish cultural movement, who was killed along with Emine Kara (Evîn Goyî), member of the Executive Council of the KCK, and long-time activist Abdurrahman Kızıl in front of the Ahmet Kaya Cultural Center in the French capital one year ago.

The slain musician was living in France, where he had applied for asylum. He was forced to leave his homeland due to the political persecution by the Turkish state. He was active in the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and was sentenced to prison by the Turkish judiciary on "terrorist charges". Mîr Perwer belonged to the Kurdish cultural movement TEV-ÇAND.

The gathering in the hometown of Mîr Perwer, in the Ewran town of Muş, was prevented by the Turkish police and gendarmerie (military police).

Turkish forces stopped those who gathered to commemorate the Kurdish artist at the entrance of the town before moving to his graveyard.

Administrators and members of the People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Muş Provincial Organization, Democratic Regions Party (DBP), DEM Party Youth Assembly and Free Women's Movement (TJA) were prevented from entering the town. Citing an alleged ban by the governor's office, Turkish forces set up a roadblock. The crowd then left the area in protest.

On the other hand, the family and relatives of Mîr Perwer managed to reach the grave of the Kurdish artist despite the unlawful obstruction of the soldiers. The family members were attacked by the soldiers and driven away from the cemetery.

Entrances and exits to the cemetery were blocked by the soldiers.

The funeral of the Kurdish musician had also taken place under police and military blockade on 5 January, 2023.
