Violation of rights in Van and Hakkari increased in 2022

In 2022, in Van and Hakkari, where the AKP-MHP government implemented war policies, prohibitions, rights violations, ecological attacks, worker deaths and political genocide operations continued.

The AKP-MHP fascist alliance, which implemented the state of emergency laws in Northern Kurdistan, carried out an all-out war policy against the Kurdish people in 2022. Especially in the cities of Van and Hakkari, bans, deaths, detentions and arrests happened on a daily basis. The national and international rights of the patriotic Kurdish people, especially democratic institutions, have been suspended in these two cities, where the laws of the state of emergency have been applied uninterruptedly for about 6 years. In 2022, violations of rights have skyrocketed in Van and Hakkari, which have been turned into semi-open prisons. In addition, hundreds of villages, hamlets, plateaus and pastures in Hakkari and Van were banned to the public and turned into "Security Areas". The final aim of the government is to force people to leave the area.

Violation of rights in prison

In 2022, violations of rights have continued in prisons in Van and Hakkari. On 10 May 2022, 80-year-old Makbule Özer and her 79-year-old husband Hadi Özer, who were seriously ill, were arrested in Van on charges of "aiding a terrorist organization". Many political inmates are ill and kept in prisons in Van, some die because their right to treatment was denied. One of these prisoners is Tahir Gürdal, 53 years old. Seriously ill Gürdal, who was imprisoned in Van F Type High Security Prison for about 10 years, was murdered because he was not treated.

Ramazan Turan, 70, a seriously ill prisoner, died on 21 January 2022, in his solitary cell. While it was claimed that he had a heart attack by the official authorities, the IHD Van Branch said that Turan's death was suspicious. Many seriously ill prisoners, such as Gürdal and Turan, were murdered by the AKP-MHP fascist government because they were kept in prisons and were not treated.

Arrests continue

The Turkish state continued to terrorize the cities of Kurdistan in 2022, arbitrarily raiding many houses and institutions and detaining hundreds of people. Those who participated in democratic actions and events were detained and arrested.

On October 9, the police attacked a crowd who wanted to protest the international conspiracy against Kurdish people's leader Abdullah Öcalan. As a result of the police attack, HDP Iğdır MP Habip Eksik had his leg broken, many people were injured and 20 people were detained.

On November 27, 16 people were detained in house raids in Hakkari city center, Gever and Şemzinan districts. Three of these 16 people were later arrested.

In November, 24 people were detained in house raids in Van.

Between 19-28 December, 8 people were detained during the press releases.

Again on August 15, 20 people were detained on the allegation that they were making propaganda for the organization, and 3 of them were arrested.

Ecological crimes

Nature was also targeted by the AKP-MHP government in 2022. The Zap Valley, which started in Van and stretched to Hakkari and then to South Kurdistan, became the target of the AKP. Many HEPPs and dams were built in the Zap Valley located between Van-Hakkari and Hakkari-Çukurca. The dams and HEPPs built caused the Zap water to decrease and the valley to dry out. The HEPPs caused the extinction of hundreds of endemic plant and animal species in the valley. In many mountains, such as Cilo, Sümbül and Meskan, nature was killed by mining. The toxic waste used for the extraction of these mines caused the pollution of Hakkari's clean waters and the poisoning of plants and animals living in nature.

The Zilan region of Van's Erciş District, which has an important place in the history of Kurdish freedom and where 50 thousand people were massacred by the Turkish state in 1930, was also the target of the AKP. In 2022, many HEPPs and marble quarries were opened in Zilan. HEPPs were also built on the Bendimahi Stream, which is located on the Muradiye Waterfall in the Muradiye District of Van. The HEPPs and mines built here have caused the extinction of living life. Thousands of fish and other species living in Zilan, Bendimah, Zap Water have disappeared.

Workers dismissed

Hundreds of people working in the HDP municipalities of Van and Hakkari, which the AKP-MHP-fascist government had seized by replacing the freely and democratically elected mayors with trustees, were dismissed from their jobs by trustees.

Trustees hired people close to the AKP-MHP fascist government. Despite the court's request for reinstatement in 2022, 306 workers, whose jobs were terminated after the Van Metropolitan Municipality was seized by a trustee in 2016, were not reinstated as the trustees did not recognize the court’s decision.

The same situation was applied in Hakkari. In the municipalities of Hakkari and Gever, where trustees were appointed. Many workers were dismissed, and supporters of the MHP and AKP were hired instead.

30 workers from Van died in their work places

Hundreds of thousands of people lost their jobs due to the AKP's economic embargo in Kurdistan. Many had to migrate to Turkish metropolises in the hope of finding a new job. People living in Van districts, where unemployment and poverty are very high, go primarily to Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Bursa, Kocaeli and Antalya to work. People from Kurdistan generally have to work in the construction industry. Hundreds of people are sacrificed to work-related murders every year because there is no occupational safety and control.

In 2022, 30 workers from Van lost their lives due to accidents in the construction sites where they worked due to lack of occupational safety and control.
