Public meeting in London: Our greatest strength is walking together with people

DEM Party co-chair Tuncer Bakırhan said that the greatest strength of the Kurdish Freedom Movement is walking together with the people.

A large crowd attended the public gathering organized by the Jiyan Women’s Assembly and the Kurdish People’s Assembly at the Kurdish Community Centre in London, the capital of the UK. The meeting, moderated by writer and director İlham Bakır, featured DEM Party co-chair Tuncer Bakırhan and Meral Çiçek from the Kurdish Women’s Movement as speakers.

Tuncer Bakırhan emphasized that the most important power of the Kurdish Freedom Movement is walking together with the people, saying: "We walk with our people. Whenever we face difficulties, we turn to our people. This is the main secret of our struggle."

Bakırhan reminded that the Kurdish movement is an important dynamic in Turkish and Middle Eastern politics.

He noted that demands such as the right to education in one’s mother tongue, an inclusive definition of citizenship, and a democratic solution have now become the common struggle not only of the Kurdish people but of all oppressed groups: "The DEM Party defends the rights not only of the Kurds but also of Alevis, socialists, dissident students, retirees, and all marginalized groups."

He underlined that a solution would only be possible through this broad social participation and will.

Tuncer Bakırhan also shared his views on the role of CHP in the process: "Perhaps for the first time in the history of the republic, the CHP is presenting proposals on education in the mother tongue and the definition of equal citizenship and is taking a position to contribute to this process. This is something that strengthens our hopes for the process. At the same time, it will help the process spread across wider segments of society."

Bakırhan further stated that for a democratic solution in Turkey "the table needs to be set up again," adding: "We tell the government: Come and resolve this issue through democratic means. The DEM Party will not shy away from taking its place at this table, as long as there is the will to do so."

Speaking at the meeting, Meral Çiçek from the Kurdish Women’s Movement emphasized that "the initiative for this process lies with Leader Apo [Abdullah Öcalan]," which she said is the most important aspect that differentiates this period from previous ones: "This process must be approached in two dimensions. On one hand, the leadership is discussing the legal dimension with the Turkish state. On the other hand, we women have a great responsibility to build a democratic society. We must build peace and a democratic society with women’s leadership."
