17 year old woman Ala Ferhat burnt herself to death in the city of Hewlêr, South Kurdistan.

The woman whom her family had forced her to get marry at the age of 16 was mother of one child.

Ferhat poured fuel on herself and set herself on fire in the neighborhood of Gulan on 10 September, reportedly because of the domestic pressure and violence she was being subject to.

The woman who was seriously wounded at the scene was being treated at Hewlêr hospital for the last two weeks. She was confirmed dead on Monday.

Jîlemo Ebdulqadir, President of Department of Women's Rights of Federal Kurdistan Region, said in a statement after the woman's death that she committed suicide because of the unending assaults and violence by her husband, quoting Ferhat's statements to police before the incident.

The woman's husband Ala Ferhat was taken into custody after the incident.
