Countless actions and activities are taking place as part of the international “Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan and a political solution to the Kurdish question” campaign. These range from prisoners' hunger strikes to rallies, demonstrations and spontaneous actions to the “100,000 postcards to Imrali” campaign.
An action also took place in the Swiss canton of Vaud in the historic city of Payerne. The action was organized by the Lausanne Women's Council Lajîn and the Kurdish youth movement. Dozens of activists wrote cards to Abdullah Öcalan, who has been imprisoned in Imrali for 25 years, to break his isolation. There has been no sign of life from Imrali for three years and there is cause for grave concern.
Aysel Argın, spokeswoman for the Lajîn Women's Council, said: “We will continue our actions until the total isolation is broken. It is crucial that everyone actively participates in this campaign.” Argın announced a strong participation from Switzerland in the demonstration for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan that will take place in Cologne on 17 February. After the speech, the participants sent off their cards chanting slogans.
