Activists on vigil in front of the UN in Geneva protest the execution of Kurds in Iran

Kurds holding a vigil in front of the UN headquarters in Geneva since 2021 protested the execution of four Kurdish youths by the Iranian regime.

A vigil by the Democratic Kurdish Community in Switzerland has been taking place in front of the UN headquarters in Geneva since 25 January 2021. Every Wednesday, activists stage a protest in front of the United Nations building to demand the release of Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan. The action is carried out as part of the 'Dem dema azadiye' [Time for Freedom] campaign and directed against the isolation of the Kurdish leader on the Turkish prison island of Imrali, the Turkish occupation attacks on Kurdistan, the massacres committed in Kurdish territories and the silence of the UN.

During today’s vigil, activists paid tribute to Kurdish political prisoners Pejman Fatehi (28 years old), Mohsen Mazloum (27 years old), Vafa Azarbar (26 years old) and Mohammad Faramarzi (28 years old) who were executed in Iran on 29 January after 18 months in prison. After the execution of 4 Kurds, harsh reactions against the Iranian regime developed in four parts of Kurdistan and many countries of the world.

İbrahim Yüksel, on behalf of the action committee, spoke about the absolute isolation of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan and said: "While the inhuman isolation of our leader increases day by day, the attacks against the Kurdish people and Kurdistan continue at the same alarming rate."

Yüksel saluted the hunger strike action carried out by political prisoners demanding an end to the isolation and the physical freedom of Abdullah Öcalan.

Denouncing the international conspiracy of 15 February 1998, when Öcalan was captured in Kenya and handed over to Turkey, Yüksel criticised the silence of the forces that were involved in the conspiracy back then and are taking no action today in the face of the attacks targeting the Kurdish people in four parts of Kurdistan.
